Participants Wanted for Scientific Study

Investigation of a non-hormonal, wearable sensor-based, digital contraceptive device (PREP-Study)

USZ Universitätsspital Zürich
Participants Wanted for Scientific Study

Participants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Live in Switzerland
  • Want to prevent pregnancy
  • Have a menstrual cycle length between 24 and 35 days

In the following we have summarized the most important details about this research project.

Who is conducting this research project?

This study is being conducted by the University Hospital Zurich in cooperation with Ava.

Aim of the study

Before a medical device can be used, it must be scientifically investigated in study participants. We therefore want to investigate whether Ava Prevent, a digital contraceptive device, is effective and safe before it receives market approval.

Study schedule and duration

You will use the contraceptive device, Ava Prevent, according to the instructions for use for a period of three complete menstrual cycles.  This involves wearing a sensor bracelet during sleep that measures several physiological parameters. Upon waking, the user synchronizes the bracelet with the Ava Prevent smartphone app and the app then provides the user with a real-time, daily contraceptive instruction (i.e., if the use of a barrier method or abstinence is required to prevent a pregnancy on the respective day).

The duration of the study is approximately three to four months.

At the beginning of the study, at the end of each cycle during the study, and at the end of the study, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire. This is a siteless study and does not require personal appearances for appointments.

What are the associated benefits?

By participating, you are making a valuable contribution to innovation in women's health.

During your study participation, the investigational device Ava Prevent will be provided to you free of charge. Because it is an investigational device that is only to be used in the context of a clinical investigation, you will have to return the Ava bracelet when your study participation ends. Upon study completion, you will be given a 100% discount-code for an Ava Prevent purchase. That means, if you decide you want to use Ava Prevent once it is available on the market, you will receive Ava Prevent for free.

What are the associated risks?

Although Ava Prevent is a contraceptive product, there is a risk of unplanned pregnancy, because no method of contraception is 100% effective.

Users who are susceptible to skin irritation induced by sweat and contact with certain materials may experience skin irritation at the wrist. If the bracelet is worn too tightly on the wrist, numbness in the hands/fingers may occur.

What happens to my data?

All data will be treated confidentially. All data protection requirements are strictly adhered to.

Whom can I contact in case of questions or uncertainties?

You have the opportunity to contact us at any time: [email protected]

What do I have to do if I want to participate in the study?

If you are interested in participating, please click on "I want to participate" and then provide your contact details. These will solely be used to contact you for study procedures and to provide you with the study material. We will send you the full participant information sheet via postal mail and inform you about the further procedure. Please note that when contact between you and the study coordination is initiated, your data will be registered. If you are not interested in study participation, your data will be deleted immediately.

Thank you for your interest and dedication!

Kind regards on behalf of the entire study team.
