If you just dipped your toe into the world of online forums for women who are trying to get pregnant, you might be totally overwhelmed by all the acronyms. It’s okay\u2014you’ll grow to love them, really. When you’re 7DPO and have to flush your FMU so your don’t POAS\u00a0 and see the dreaded BFN, it’s really fun to talk in a secret language to other women who understand what you’re going through.<\/p>\n

So don’t fret: here’s your handy guide to the most common acronyms. You’ll know them all by heart in no time.<\/p>\n

2WW<\/strong>: Two week wait<\/a> (before testing, not always 2 weeks)<\/p>\n

AF<\/strong>: Aunt Flo, menstruation<\/p>\n

BBT<\/strong>: Basal body temperature<\/a><\/p>\n

BC\/BCP<\/strong>: Birth Control Pill<\/p>\n

BD<\/strong>: Baby dance. This means having sex for conceptive purposes, or any other form of insemination such as IUI or IVF. (The Ava community invented their own term for this. See entry for “GSD” below.)<\/p>\n

BFN<\/strong>: Big Fat Negative (pregnancy test)<\/p>\n

BFP<\/strong>: Big Fat Positive<\/a> (pregnancy test)<\/p>\n

CD<\/strong>: Cycle day<\/p>\n

CM<\/strong>: Cervical mucus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

CP<\/strong>: Chemical pregnancy (a very early miscarriage)<\/p>\n

DPO<\/strong>: Days past ovulation<\/p>\n

EWCM<\/strong>: Egg white cervical mucus, the most fertile kind.<\/p>\n

FSH<\/strong>: Follicle Stimulating Hormone<\/p>\n

FMU<\/strong>: First Morning Urine<\/p>\n

FP<\/strong>: Follicular Phase<\/p>\n

FRER<\/strong>: First response early result pregnancy test<\/p>\n

GSD<\/strong>: Get Shit Done, or do what you need to do to make a baby (sex, IUI, IVF\u2026)<\/p>\n

HPT<\/strong>: Home pregnancy test. Measures levels of the hormone hcG.<\/p>\n

HSG<\/strong>:\u00a0hysterosalpingogram, a test that looks inside the uterus and fallopian tubes.<\/p>\n

HcG<\/strong>: Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. Hormone detected by pregnancy tests.<\/p>\n

IUI<\/strong>: Intra-uterine insemination<\/p>\n

IVF<\/strong>: In-vitro fertilization<\/p>\n

LH<\/strong>: Luteinizing Hormone<\/p>\n

LMP<\/strong>: Last menstrual period. The first day of your last period.<\/p>\n

LP<\/strong>: Luteal Phase<\/p>\n

LPD<\/strong>: Luteal Phase Defect<\/p>\n

MC<\/strong>: Miscarriage<\/p>\n

MFI<\/strong>: Male Factor Infertility<\/p>\n

NTNP<\/strong>: Not Trying, Not Preventing<\/p>\n

O<\/strong>: Ovulation<\/p>\n

OPK<\/strong>: Ovulation Prediction Kit. OPKs measure luteinizing hormone, which surges about one day before ovulation.<\/p>\n

PCOS<\/strong>: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome<\/a><\/p>\n

POAS<\/strong>: Pee on a stick<\/p>\n

RE<\/strong>: Reproductive Endocrinologist<\/p>\n

SA<\/strong>: Semen analysis<\/p>\n

SMEP<\/strong>: Sperm Meets Egg Plan<\/a><\/p>\n

TCOYF<\/strong>: “Taking Charge of Your Fertility<\/a>,” a book by Toni Weschler about how to monitor your body’s natural fertility signs.<\/p>\n
