That\u2019s what everyone tells you. You probably even thought at one point in your life that sex definitely lead to pregnancy. A thought that might have scared you a little.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting pregnant, as we now know, is not always such a simple thing. And if it\u2019s taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/how-long-to-get-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">longer than you hoped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the stress can become overwhelming. You might even start obsessing over the trying to conceive (TTC) process: from timing sex juuust right to cancelling plans during your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/expectful.com\/articles\/two-week-wait-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two-week wait<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding to this, if you\u2019ve experienced loss or difficulty in your conception process, you might be\u00a0 feeling even higher levels of stress, sadness, or disappointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Research on Stress and Fertility<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve probably heard of fight or flight before, the notion that we either run away from battle or scratch and claw our way to survival. When we\u2019re feeling stressed, our body&#8217;s natural response is to turn on its fight or flight response.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This response signals a release of hormones, like cortisol, which can lead to physiological changes that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6275085\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negatively impact your reproductive health in the long-term<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also cause an increased heart rate, shortness of breath, anxiety, headaches, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prolonged exposure to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/expectful.com\/articles\/stress-and-fertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and high cortisol levels may also lead to something known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/im-really-healthy-except-i-dont-get-my-period-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypothalamic amenorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a condition where the menstrual cycle shuts down and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/what-is-ovulation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stops entirely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing chronic stress, it could also affect your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4199300\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">libido<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leading <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to a decrease in the frequency (and pleasure) of the sex you have. Thus turning sex into more of a chore than something you actually want to participate in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, even if stress isn\u2019t affecting your chances of conceiving, it may be negatively impacting your life. That matters, too. And the unfortunate, but probably obvious news, is that stress is especially common among people who are having trouble getting pregnant:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27018159\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed 352 women seeking treatment for infertility and found that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than half<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of them showed signs of depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15242992\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of 112 women found that 40% of participants had a diagnosable mental health issue during the course of reproductive treatment, such as generalized anxiety or major depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress levels can<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1459266\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as more time without successfully conceiving passes by.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this to say: if trying to conceive causes you stress, that stress could then equal a more difficult time conceiving, which could then equal even more stress\u2026 and the cycle continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what do we do about it?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to Overcome Stress While TTC<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can\u2019t always change our circumstances around getting pregnant, but we can control how we cope with the challenges in our lives. Saying, \u201cjust relax,\u201d or, \u201cstop obsessing over it,\u201d are typically not helpful or useful \u2014 whether someone is saying it to you or the phrases have become your inner monologue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, try these tips to find healthy ways to reduce your stress and express any emotions related to trying to conceive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Practice Mindfulness &amp; Meditation<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a mounting body of evidence in support of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/expectful.com\/articles\/decrease-prenatal-stress-expectful-mindfulness-apps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meditation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that shows the myriad benefits it has for you. Meditation reduces <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34112605\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and anxiety, increases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3176989\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mindfulness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and awareness, and helps you fall <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/expectful.com\/articles\/sleep-and-fertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stay asleep longer. All these things in turn help your fertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t just take our word for it though, study after study supports the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11239991\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meditation as a stress-reducer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34112605\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 randomized controlled trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finding that a mindfulness program reduced stress in women who have had multiple miscarriages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4803966\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindfulness interventions are also effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for improving both the mental health and relationships of women diagnosed with infertility, as well as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eprints.mums.ac.ir\/5640\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specifically for those undergoing in vitro fertilization treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Journal Your Honest Thoughts<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mental.jmir.org\/2018\/4\/e11290\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journaling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might sound tedious if you aren\u2019t one to normally write things down. The great thing about journaling though, is that you get to decide exactly how you want to go about the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore your honest, most private fears, thoughts, and feelings in a place that is just yours. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will you ever have a child? What if we can\u2019t afford another round of IVF? How would I feel if I saw a negative pregnancy test?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are all examples of questions you might work out or more positively reframe while journaling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re worried about anyone seeing your journal, try hiding it somewhere only you know about, or simply dispose of the entries after you feel settled at a stopping point with your writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Plan Intentional Self-Care Time<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-care isn\u2019t just eating healthy and making good lifestyle choices. We say anything that makes you feel good counts as self-care. Whether it\u2019s a long bubble bath, doing your skincare routine, watching a sultry show, or just sitting in silence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key here is to be intentional about taking this time to de-stress and find some calm in the chaos of trying to conceive. Carve out a specific day and time that you can stick with and make that your unapologetic, uninterrupted self-care time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Find a Support Group<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We weren\u2019t designed to go through life alone. That village everyone talks about is so needed, even in our age of hyper-connectivity and smartphones. When it comes to infertility, loss, or if you\u2019re just starting the process, a welcoming group where you can learn, share, and grow is vastly underrated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/expectful.com\/support-groups?stage=fertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hosted by an expert in the field is also a great way to get unbiased insight and advice about your journey. A safe place to share your feelings, connect with others in a similar situation, and simply allow you to be seen and heard \u2014 sounds nice, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Exercise, But Don\u2019t Overdo It<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical activity both lowers stress and boosts fertility, but be careful not to overdo it. While the \u201cright amount,\u201d of exercise can be beneficial for women trying to get pregnant, too much can actually have the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40279-016-0669-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opposite effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly in combination with energy deficit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The general recommendation is 1 to 5 hours, per week, of moderate activity. If you have concerns about your unique needs, be sure to talk with your doctor before you plan to add in a new workout routine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to meditation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/expectful.com\/events\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yoga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/expectful.com\/events\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pilates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help relieve tension. They may also <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/jpah.iaushiraz.ac.ir\/article_673139_fcfbce4c29a10d1bbcd92eac9d93c358.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the production of stress hormones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affecting your chances of getting pregnant. If you\u2019re looking for low-impact, high-result workouts for your prenatal routine, you might want to start here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Have Sex for Fun<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember when you and the person you\u2019re trying to make a baby with used to have sex, like, all the time? Back before life got busy and it became more of a task than something that was pleasurable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this sounds familiar, try to be proactive in finding time for sex. For example, if you or your partner are too tired in the evening, try moving sex to the mornings. Or, if you need a little romancing before sex\u2014or maybe you just want more one-on-one time with your partner\u2014plan a special date when it works for you both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While sex can help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15961213\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s more likely to do so when you aren\u2019t feeling the pressure of trying to conceive. Wherever you are in your cycle, plan time for sex that you have just for the joy of having sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>You Are Not Alone in Your TTC Journey<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oftentimes, when we\u2019re going through a rough spot, it can feel like it\u2019s only happening to us. The world closes in and self-isolation just seems to happen \u2014 but you are not alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/infertility\/index.htm#:~:text=Is%20infertility%20a%20common%20problem,year%20of%20trying%20(infertility).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 5 women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States will experience infertility.
