{"id":39388,"date":"2021-06-08T12:56:19","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T19:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/?p=39388"},"modified":"2021-06-22T17:07:54","modified_gmt":"2021-06-23T00:07:54","slug":"can-covid-vaccine-affect-period","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/can-covid-vaccine-affect-period\/","title":{"rendered":"Do COVID Vaccines Affect Your Period &#038; Menstrual Cycle?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many women <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/covid-vaccine-and-menstrual-cycle-side-effects-women-coronavirus-period\/10551643\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are reporting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> weird menstrual cycles after vaccination, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/why-missed-period\/\">late periods<\/a> and lighter or heavier flows than normal. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These claims drew the attention of Dr. Kate Clancy, an associate professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois, when she herself experienced a heavier than normal period. \u201cI&#8217;m a week and a half out from dose 1 of Moderna, got my period maybe a day or so early, and am gushing like I&#8217;m in my 20s again,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KateClancy\/status\/1364671490772320259?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intrigued, she and her colleague Katharine Lee, a postdoctoral scholar of public health sciences at Washington University, quickly set up an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redcap.healthinstitute.illinois.edu\/surveys\/index.php?s=LL8TKKC8DP\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to gather data on menstrual changes after vaccination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clancy\u2019s study is still ongoing, but she recently told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2021\/04\/16\/irregular-menstrual-cycle-isnt-listed-as-a-covid-19-vaccine-side-effect--but-many-report-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that her early data show that &#8220;[p]eople who have historically menstruated, but are not menstruating now because they are, for instance, trans on gender-affirming hormones, on long-acting reversible contraception, or are postmenopausal&#8230; some number of them have experienced bleeding when they had not for a very long period of time.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;People who expected to menstruate,&#8221; she added, commonly report either &#8220;no change,&#8221; or &#8220;absent or late&#8221; or &#8220;heavy and early&#8221; periods. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Vaccination Really Causing These Changes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, we do not know whether vaccination is affecting women\u2019s menstrual cycles, and we are unlikely to get firm answers soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that &#8220;the variability of the menstrual cycle, even within one woman, is quite large in general,&#8221; as Dr. Jerilynn Prior, a professor of endocrinology at the University of British Columbia recently told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/women-covid-vaccines-1.5991026?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBC news<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ecause so many women experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/get-pregnant-irregular-periods\/\">irregular periods<\/a>, we cannot tell whether the reported changes are due to vaccination or something else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vaccination affect your menstrual cycle? Yes, it could. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajenda.substack.com\/p\/the-covid-19-vaccine-and-menstrual\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Jen Gunter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gynecologist and author of the Vagina Bible, vaccination could plausibly affect a woman\u2019s menstruation in a few ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, vaccination could <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indirectly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affect your period, by altering your stress levels. Perhaps you\u2019re worried about potential vaccine side effects like fatigue, chills, and headaches. Or perhaps your stress levels drop because you are so relieved to finally get vaccinated and to be able to see your family and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental and physical stressors like long work hours and illness can definitely affect your menstrual cycle\u2014typically by delaying ovulation, which in turn delays your period. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1472648320305253\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found about a quarter of menstruating women with COVID-19 reported cycle changes, mostly delayed cycles and lighter periods. (Reassuringly, the study also looked at fertility-related hormones, and no changes were seen.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another possibility is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">direct <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effect, in which your body\u2019s immune response to the vaccine, which involves inflammation, also affects the uterine lining (endometrium). Normal menstruation and the shedding of the endometrium involves inflammatory signals and activation of several types of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fimmu.2019.02387\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so this is a plausible biological mechanism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, even if period changes are\u2014indirectly or directly\u2014triggered by vaccination, the effects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajenda.substack.com\/p\/the-covid-19-vaccine-and-menstrual\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should be temporary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Should I Seek Medical Attention or Treatment?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because any mild menstrual changes after vaccination are likely minor and temporary, you do not need to seek medical attention if your period is slightly heavier or lighter than normal, or later or earlier than normal, or if you experience light spotting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, you should never ignore the types of bleeding that would normally lead you to seek medical attention. If you are pregnant and experiencing abnormal bleeding, or post-menopausal and bleeding, or experiencing extremely heavy bleeding, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a36367479\/does-covid-19-vaccine-affect-mentstrual-cycles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Margaret Polaneczky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gynecologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, advises contacting your doctor right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do Menstrual Cycle Changes Imply That the Vaccines Will Harm My Pregnancy or Fertility?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports of menstrual changes, associated with the vaccines or not, have made some women understandably skittish about whether the vaccines might affect their pregnancies or chances of conceiving. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/internet\/viral-vaccine-infertility-misinformation-finds-home-social-media-n1267310\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misinformation circulating on social media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claiming that vaccines or \u201cvaccine-induced shedding\u201d will harm women\u2019s pregnancies or fertility can heighten these concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthere is no evidence that the vaccine can lead to loss of fertility. While fertility was not specifically studied in the clinical trials of the vaccine, no loss of fertility has been reported among trial participants or among the millions who have received the vaccines since their authorization, and no signs of infertility appeared in animal studies,\u201d<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/news\/news-releases\/2021\/02\/medical-experts-assert-covid-vaccines-do-not-impact-fertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although we don\u2019t have much direct data from the early vaccine trials, what we do have is reassuring. In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/144416\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phase 3 trial of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 23 women conceived during the course of the trial, 11 in the placebo group and 12 in the vaccine group. Two of these women reported adverse events, but both were in the placebo group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2104983\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">observational study of women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who got vaccinated while pregnant similarly found no signs of elevated rates of pregnancy-related complications or birth defects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, pregnant women <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/need-extra-precautions\/pregnant-people.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do face an elevated risk of developing severe COVID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, being hospitalized and needing mechanical ventilation. They also have an elevated risk of preterm delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should I Still Get Vaccinated if I Am Undergoing IVF or Another Fertility-Related Procedure?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients undergoing fertility treatment and pregnant women should receive the [mRNA] vaccines, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asrm.org\/globalassets\/asrm\/asrm-content\/news-and-publications\/covid-19\/covidtaskforceupdate13.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Society of Reproductive Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSince the [mRNA] vaccine is not a live virus, there is no reason to delay pregnancy attempts because of vaccination administration or to defer treatment until the second dose has been administered.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They do, however, make one caveat to this recommendation: Women scheduled for \u201celective surgery or outpatient procedures, including oocyte retrieval, embryo transfer, and intrauterine insemination, [should] avoid COVID-19 vaccination at least three days prior and three days after their procedure.\u201d This is not because vaccination would interfere with your procedure\u2019s likelihood of success, but because side effects from vaccination such as fever could complicate the monitoring for pre- and post-procedure infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Claims About Menstrual Changes Really Tell Us: Inclusion in Clinical Trials is Not Enough<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The menstrual changes reported thus far are not cause for concern, but they are definitely cause for frustration. The unfortunate truth is that we don\u2019t know\u2014and won\u2019t know for a while\u2014whether COVID vaccination causes temporary changes in menstrual cycles, because no one asked about women\u2019s cycles in the vaccine trials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until the 1990s, clinical trials used to exclude women as a matter of course. Thankfully, women\u2019s inclusion in clinical trials for treatments to be used in both sexes is now mandatory. This is undoubtedly a better state of affairs, but inclusion alone is still not sufficient. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2021\/04\/16\/irregular-menstrual-cycle-isnt-listed-as-a-covid-19-vaccine-side-effect--but-many-report-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clancy told Salon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;It&#8217;s not enough to include [women] if you don&#8217;t consider their particular community needs, or their particular differences that make their inclusion necessary.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Guntner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajenda.substack.com\/p\/the-covid-19-vaccine-and-menstrual\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in her substack newsletter: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of data regarding menstrual cycles and vaccines is infuriating. I am not concerned about downstream effects regarding infertility or recurrent miscarriages as this has been well-studied for a variety of vaccines.
