These include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wanting to balance your family<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fulfilling a lifelong dream of having a boy or girl<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone who has lost a child may want another of a different sex to avoid bringing up the trauma of the lost child<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone who is part of a gay couple who may feel more comfortable raising a child of their own sex<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever your reason is for wanting a boy or girl, it\u2019s important to realize the risks and benefits of trying the different methods out there. Some methods are based on science and research, and other methods are pseudoscience which will reduce your chances of getting pregnant at best and\/or harm your body or pregnancy at worst.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Can you influence the gender of a baby?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only surefire way to select a certain sex is to do in vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic screening (PGS). You may already know of IVF, which is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/assisted-reproductive-technology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assisted reproductive technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> most popularly used when dealing with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/male-infertility-treatment-options\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">male<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/female-infertility-treatment-options\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female infertility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or using sperm from a sperm donor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, through PGS, doctors are able to examine the multiple embryos that have developed from the sperm fertilizing the egg. They then can identify those that are male vs female as the sex of an embryo is determined at conception.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One caveat to the PGS method is there still is a chance that none of the multiple embryos that developed in the IVF round are the desired sex. You may get all female embryos or all male embryos. In that case, you may decide to do another round of IVF but that can get really expensive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to get pregnant with a boy or a girl<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the practices that <em>allegedly<\/em> help you conceive a boy or girl include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating certain diets such as diets high in certain minerals, or high in saturated fats and low in carbohydrates to conceive a boy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding sex on certain days, such as the Babydust method. This method alleges that having intercourse two to three days before ovulation will conceive a girl, whereas having intercourse as close to ovulation as possible will lead to conceiving a boy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying different sexual positions coupled with avoiding sex on certain days such as in the Shettles method (more on this below).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of these methods are guaranteed to give you the result you want. Some of the studies these methods were developed on are decades-old, and newer studies have refuted them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, realize that studies measuring these effects are challenging because couples have sex multiple times in a month and it is difficult to determine which sexual intercourse resulted in conception.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Shettles method: debunked decades later<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shettles method was developed by a doctor named Landrum Shettles from his work in his lab in the 1950s. His method is outlined below:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><b>Shettles Method for a girl<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>Shettles Method for a boy<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Sperm characteristics<\/b><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X-chromosome sperm are slower and bigger and thrive in an acidic environment<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Y-chromosome sperm are faster and smaller, die faster, and thrive in an alkaline environment<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Sexual position<\/b><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Front-facing (for shallow penetration)<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rear-facing (for deeper penetration)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Timing<\/b><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before ovulation<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovulation day<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Vaginal douching<\/b><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vinegar<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baking soda\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Female orgasm<\/b><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes (he thought that the secretions from a woman\u2019s orgasm were alkaline)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Dr. Shettles claimed that he had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/embryo.asu.edu\/handle\/10776\/13096\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">85 percent success<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, later studies showed that his method was not accurate at all. A 2019 review study showed that there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.3389%2Ffcell.2019.00388\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no differences between sperm carrying Y-chromosomes vs X-chromosomes in terms of speed, size, shape, strength or pH.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, sexual position will not affect how fast sperm travels to the egg. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neither will vaginal douching. But vaginal douching could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1097\/NMC.0b013e3181cae9da\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause infection that could decrease your chances of getting pregnant and more serious gynecological diseases that could cause infertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How many days before ovulation should you have sex to conceive a girl or a boy?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some small studies from the 1980s and 1990s found that it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6586497\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slightly more likely to have a male with sexual intercourse several days before ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as measured by cervical mucus), or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S0002-9378(11)90558-4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">few days after ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings are in direct conflict with the Shettles method. Obviously both methods cannot be right. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/humrep\/13.5.1397\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and more recent studies since then have shown that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fpubh.2016.00102\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">timing of sexual intercourse with respect to ovulation does not affect the sex of the baby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is the best month to conceive a boy or a girl?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned, recent studies show that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fpubh.2016.00102\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the timing of sexual intercourse with respect to ovulation does not affect the sex of the baby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Italy, a doctor found that in his clinic, women were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/humrep\/deg185\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to give birth to a boy or girl if they conceived in autumn or spring respectively<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is accumulating literature that there may be slight differences sex ratios in seasons or at the beginning or end of a season, the exact season differs by where the studies were done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.earlhumdev.2019.104865\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the jury is still out on whether there is an effect of seasonality since these studies are inconsistent in how they measure their results<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, other studies say that these effects may actually be muddled by stressful events such as war, terrorism, global warming, and more that happen at a country level. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are not urgently wanting to get pregnant, there is no harm in skipping a few months to try to conceive in a specific season. However, if you are on a time crunch, this will only hamper your chances of getting pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What should I eat to conceive a girl or a boy?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no clear associations between diet and conceiving a girl or boy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2018 study review found that there are not enough studies on this topic to generalize but they did notice a slight trend. Some studies found that a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.15296\/ijwhr.2018.66\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diet high in sodium and potassium was more likely to conceive a male<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some studies in mice (not humans) found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1095\/biolreprod.104.030890\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a diet high in saturated fats and low in carbohydrates was significantly more likely to lead to conceiving male<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, and vice versa. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key is it may not be worth it to try these diets as it can harm your health or your baby\u2019s health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What are the chances of conceiving a girl or a boy?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your chances of conceiving a girl or a boy are about 50:50, like the flip of a coin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the exact <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/gender-ratio\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex ratio at birth for males to females is approximately 105:100<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a little more than expected. Explanations include a strong preference for boys worldwide which results in about 130 million missing girls due to selective abortion, infanticide, or neglect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Can you conceive a girl on ovulation day?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned before, the latest studies show that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fpubh.2016.00102\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the timing of sexual intercourse does not affect the sex of the baby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is contrary to the Babydust method and Shettles method. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, even if timing did affect the sex of the baby, it is very hard to determine which day is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> day of ovulation. Most tools that we have to measure the day of ovulation give you a range of days, rather than the exact day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What next?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you\u2019ve learned about some of the scientific and pseudoscientific methods to sway your odds, you can decide if they are worth the benefits and risks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just keep in mind that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.rbms.2019.08.004\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most of the information online in chat rooms and Facebook groups on conceiving a child is incorrect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
