{"id":35866,"date":"2020-01-03T13:41:12","date_gmt":"2020-01-03T21:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/?p=35866"},"modified":"2020-02-20T15:02:46","modified_gmt":"2020-02-20T23:02:46","slug":"can-you-be-pregnant-and-still-get-a-period","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/can-you-be-pregnant-and-still-get-a-period\/","title":{"rendered":"Can You Be Pregnant and Still Get a Period?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not hard to find online stories about women who still got their periods while they were pregnant, but is there any science to back up those claims? A missed period is supposed to be one of the first and most clear-cut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/early-signs-of-pregnancy\/\">signs of pregnancy<\/a>. Unfortunately, our bodies don\u2019t always like to play by the rules. Two common examples of this are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many women experience period-like bleeding and PMS symptoms, even after getting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/positive-pregnancy-tests-evap\/\">positive pregnancy test<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some women experience period-like bleeding, assume that they\u2019re not pregnant, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start experiencing unexpected symptoms of pregnancy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can You Really Get Your Period While Pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer is no. Your period, by definition, only occurs after you ovulate, and you cannot ovulate when you are pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the first half of your cycle, your uterine lining thickens in preparation for a possible pregnancy. After ovulation, your progesterone levels increase, maintaining your uterine lining.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t get pregnant, progesterone levels drop after about two weeks, and your lining begins to shed\u2014this is your period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the egg <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been fertilized, and if it successfully implants in your uterine lining, then it will start secreting the hormone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hcg-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This hormone signals to your body to keep your uterine lining intact. You may still experience some form of bleeding or spotting, but, by definition, it is not your period.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Common Is Period-Like Bleeding in Early Pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/article\/PMC\/2884141\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This epidemiological study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at the pregnancies of 4,539 women and found that 27% of women without miscarriage reported experiencing some form of bleeding during pregnancy. The most common time for bleeding to occur was 5 \u2013 8 weeks of gestation (or 1 \u2013 3 weeks after a missed period).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of those women:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 15% experienced bleeding at the same time as their next expected period.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 2% experienced a heavy flow that lasted 3 or more days and could be mistaken for a regular period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No women experienced bleeding episodes that followed their regular monthly cycle, including typical period length and heaviness.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Much Bleeding Is Normal in Early Pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When talking about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/pregnancy-discharge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy discharge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is no true \u201cnormal.\u201d Pregnancy symptoms are different for everybody. However, light spotting tends to be more common than bleeding that is heavy enough to be mistaken for a period. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/article\/PMC\/2884141\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The above study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journals.elsevier.com\/annals-of-epidemiology\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annals of Epidemiology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 found that, of the women who experienced bleeding during early pregnancy:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">76% only had episodes of spotting (which the study defined as blood only noticed when wiping)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18% experienced light bleeding (where the heaviest day of bleeding was still lighter than a woman\u2019s typical menstrual flow)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6% experienced bleeding as heavy or heavier than their normal flow<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To sum it up, 27% of women experienced some form of bleeding during early pregnancy. Of those women, about 6% experienced bleeding that was heavy enough to be mistaken for period bleeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does spotting or bleeding in pregnancy mean miscarriage?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any amount of bleeding during pregnancy can be scary, but it&#8217;s not necessarily a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/miscarriage-symptoms-signs\/\">sign of miscarriage<\/a>. Women who experience spotting or light bleeding during pregnancy are no more likely to miscarry than women with no bleeding, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2828396\/\">2010 study published in Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Heavy bleeding, on the other hand, was strongly predictive of miscarriage. Women in the study who experienced heavy bleeding had three times the miscarriage risk of women with no bleeding. (Heavy bleeding was defined as bleeding that was as heavy or heavier than a woman&#8217;s usual menstrual period.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the risk of miscarriage, vaginal bleeding during the first trimester may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/greenjournal\/abstract\/1984\/04000\/effect_of_vaginal_bleeding_in_early_pregnancy_on.15.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">associated with an increased risk for preterm birth, and low birth weight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can Implantation Bleeding Look Similar to Period Bleeding?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/implantation-bleeding\/\">Implantation bleeding<\/a> is one of the most commonly cited explanations for early pregnancy bleeding. But surprisingly, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is no evidence that the process of implantation causes bleeding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, there is evidence that implantation does <em>not<\/em> cause bleeding.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/humrep\/deg379\">This study<\/a> found that, for most women who experience spotting during early pregnancy, it doesn\u2019t start until at least five days after implantation. Yes, bleeding during early pregnancy is fairly common, but it has nothing to do with when the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Causes Bleeding During Early Pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Occasionally, there is a clear cause for spotting or bleeding during early pregnancy:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cervical irritation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection (such as bacterial vaginosis)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subchorionic hematoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ectopic pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/miscarriage-101\/\">Miscarriage<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/chemical-pregnancy\/\">chemical pregnancy<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But much of the time, no clear cause can be found for episodes of bleeding or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/spotting-during-pregnancy\/\">spotting during pregnancy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been theorized that early pregnancy bleeding may have something to do with the formation of the placenta.\u00a0<\/span>In the first few weeks of pregnancy, the corpus luteum is responsible for producing the progesterone necessary to maintain the pregnancy. But progesterone production <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/obgynsurvey\/Citation\/1978\/02000\/INDISPENSABILITY_OF_THE_HUMAN_CORPUS_LUTEUM_IN_THE.1.aspx\">shifts to the placenta around week 7<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2828396\/#R17\">the study in Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology<\/a> note that this coincides with when bleeding is most commonly observed, during gestational weeks 5 \u2013 8. They surmise that heavy bleeding during this time may signal a problem with development of the placenta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Should You Call Your Healthcare Provider About First-Trimester Bleeding?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there really isn\u2019t any surefire way to tell whether your early-pregnancy bleeding \u2014 whether it\u2019s just light spotting or heavier bleeding with clots \u2014 is harmless or a sign of a more concerning issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though vaginal bleeding during pregnancy can indicate an underlying medical condition, it doesn\u2019t mean that you should fear the worst. Yes, bleeding during pregnancy could be a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miscarriage symptom<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it could also be caused by any of the above factors. The only way to diagnose the cause of the bleeding is to go to your healthcare provider for further testing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your bleeding is accompanied by dizziness or pain on only one side of your body, it may be a symptom of an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/ectopic-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ectopic pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a serious medical condition. If you notice those symptoms, you should call your physician immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are concerned about any bleeding during your pregnancy, even if you aren\u2019t experiencing any additional symptoms, don\u2019t hesitate to contact your doctor to discuss what it means.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Causes Other Period Symptoms in Early Pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many women can start to feel symptoms during early pregnancy that can be easily mistaken for PMS. This is due to the effects of the hormone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/all-about-progesterone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progesterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which increases during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/luteal-phase\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">luteal phase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your cycle (between when you ovulate and when your next period begins). It is responsible for both PMS symptoms and early pregnancy symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after implantation, your embryo will start to release hCG, which will make progesterone levels stay high. If you\u2019re not pregnant, progesterone levels will fall, signaling for your body to begin shedding your uterine lining and start menstruation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either way, the progesterone in your body can cause a host of effects that make it difficult to tell whether you\u2019re pregnant or you\u2019re about to get your period. Some symptoms of early pregnancy that may be mistaken for PMS (or, on the flip side, symptoms of PMS that may be mistaken for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/early-signs-of-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early signs of pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal bleeding or spotting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cramping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast sensitivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower back pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability or mood swings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Can You Tell the Difference Between Your Period and Pregnancy Spotting?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer? You can\u2019t. Many women experience vaginal bleeding during the luteal phase of their cycle, as well as during early pregnancy.
