Using insights from artificial intelligence and machine learning, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the study<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">then examined whether an algorithm could accurately identify the fertile window in real-time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What we wanted to see from this study is if wearable sensor technology could help women track physiological changes across their menstrual cycle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and whether this method could fill the present gap between expensive ovulation detection (like sonograms) and free, less-precise fertile window approximation (like traditional BBT measurements).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This study represents the first of its kind to research multiple physiological changes concurrently across the menstrual cycle. And d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rawing on insight from artificial intelligence and machine learning,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the study revealed that the Ava <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">algorithm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0could detect the 5 most fertile days in real-time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Phases of the menstrual cycle<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In keeping with previous research, we divided the menstrual cycle into the following 5 phases:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">menstruation, starting with the first day of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the period<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and lasting 5 days<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the follicular phase, starting on the first-day post menses and lasting through 6 days before ovulation (OV \u20136)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the fertile window, starting 5 days before ovulation and lasting through ovulation (OV \u20135 to OV)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the early luteal phase, starting 1 day after ovulation through a week after ovulation (OV+1 to OV+7)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the late luteal phase, starting 8 days after ovulation (OV+8) and lasting through the day before the onset of menses<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Study set up<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To conduct this prospective longitudinal study, we recruited 237 conception-seeking Swiss women<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. All participants wore the Ava bracelet nightly while sleeping. They continued in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">study for up to a year\u2014or until they became pregnant. In addition to syncing the device to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Ava\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">app\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">daily, women also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recorded their activities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in the past 24 hours. Finally, women took a urinary luteinizing hormone test at several points in a given cycle to determine the close of the fertile window. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study showed that there w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ere<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">changes in physiological signals <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during different phases of the menstrual cycle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">then trained a machine learning algorithm to recognize the fertile window.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After analyzing the clinical data, we observed significant changes in physiological signals, as captured by the wearable device across the menstrual cycle. Changes in the following physical signs were found:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wrist Skin Temperature<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Heart Rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Heart Rate Variability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Respiratory Rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Skin Perfusion<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What do these findings mean in a broader sense?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is so exciting about this paper is that it reveals an important truth about the menstrual cycle: temperature is not the only thing that changes during the different phases of the cycle. In fact, we see changes in 5 different signals throughout the cycle, and by tracking those parameters simultaneously, we can detect when a woman is fertile. \u200b Until now, what was understood about the menstrual cycle was that only 1 signal\u2014temperature\u2014that changed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But we found that 4\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">other<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fphysiological signals <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">also<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fchange and that tracking all 5 of these signals together allows us to detect the fertile window in real <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time.\u200b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> No other product tracks all 5 of these signals. \u200bWe are proud to publish these findings in a peer-reviewed journal, both because it proves that Ava\u2019s novel, multi-parameter fertility tracking algorithm is capable of detecting the fertile window with 89% accuracy (confidence interval 0.89 \u2013 0.92) and because it expands scientific understanding of women\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">health.\u200b<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">Why is Ava publishing this study?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ava\u2019s vision as a company is that we become a long-term companion for women, giving them scientific and data-driven insights across all stages of their reproductive lives. We aim to do so through clinical research and Artificial Intelligence. \u200bIn the past, medical researchers have thought of women\u2019s bodies as unruly, complicated, or mysterious\u2014and this is part of the reason why we still don\u2019t fully understand menstrual hormones and how they impact women\u2019s health. \u200b\u200b<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our vision is a big part of why we published our paper.
