{"id":28889,"date":"2018-12-12T09:56:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-12T17:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/?p=28889"},"modified":"2019-08-07T16:22:45","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T23:22:45","slug":"pregnancy-symptoms-week-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/pregnancy-symptoms-week-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Pregnancy Symptoms\u2014Week 3 (Still Waiting to Feel Pregnant)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At three weeks pregnant, you still may not feel any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/early-pregnancy-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early pregnancy symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at all. And because it&#8217;s still so early, you won&#8217;t be able to test for pregnancy yet. Hang on one more week until your first missed period. If you conceived this cycle, then the egg was most likely fertilized in the past few days. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/what-is-ovulation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually occurs around cycle day 14. But this is an average, and the exact ovulation date varies from woman to woman. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC27529\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that women ovulated anywhere from cycle day 8 cycle day 26.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, since pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last menstrual period, it\u2019s hard to determine at this point whether the egg has been fertilized yet or not. But either way, you\u2019re getting close to the moment of conception. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens after conception?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re trying to determine when your pregnancy began, the date you\u2019re really looking for is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/when-does-implantation-occur\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implantation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014when the fertilized egg burrowed into your uterine lining, thereby beginning your pregnancy. You can figure out this date using a couple of simple formulas (which we\u2019ve also covered in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/implantation-calculator-when-did-it-happen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implantation calculator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> post).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process of implantation usually takes place between eight \u2013 10 days after ovulation. And as soon as it is complete, the embryo starts producing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hcg-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hCG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is the hormone that pregnancy tests detect. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there any p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regnancy symptoms in week 3?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probably not. In a non-pregnancy cycle, progesterone levels would be falling at this point. But in pregnancy, hCG sends a signal for progesterone production to continue, and to increase. This increase in progesterone levels is responsible for many of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/first-signs-of-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first signs of pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But at this point, you probably won\u2019t be feeling anything just yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(But if you\u2019re interested in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/tracking\/pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tracking your pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> week by week\u2014Ava can help.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I feel pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most women begin to feel symptoms around the fifth or sixth week. \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12160915\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which examined 136 women for the onset of pregnancy symptoms, found that half of the women felt symptoms by the end of the fifth week and 89% did so by the end of the eighth week.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How big is the baby?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby\u2019s Length: 0.0 in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby\u2019s Weight: 0.00 oz.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is the baby developing?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the sperm and egg meet, they create a single-cell, fertilized egg called a zygote. Almost immediately, this cell will divide as it makes its way through the fallopian tube toward the uterus. Eventually, the zygote becomes a hollow ball of cells called a blastocyst. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may surprise you, but your child\u2019s sex and inherited genetic characteristics (like hair, eye, and skin color; body type; and even some personality and intelligence traits) are set at the moment of conception. Your zygote has 46 chromosomes\u201423 from you, 23 from your partner. These chromosomes are the blueprint your baby follows as it develops.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about multiples?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If more than one egg is released during ovulation and each is fertilized by a sperm, more than one embryo may implant and grow in your uterus; this results in fraternal multiples. When a single fertilized egg splits, it results in multiple identical embryos. Identical multiples are less common than fraternal ones. Your likelihood of having multiples increases if there\u2019s a family history of multiples on your side, if you\u2019re taking fertility drugs, or if you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/Patients\/FAQs\/Multiple-Pregnancy#are\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older than 35<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Also\u2014if you\u2019ve already delivered fraternal multiples, you\u2019re five times more likely to carry another set in your next pregnancy. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s happening in my body?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implantation usually occurs 8 \u2013 10 days <\/span><a href=\"about:blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It takes this long for the fertilized egg to make its way through the fallopian tube and into the uterus. Once there, the blastocyst buries itself\u2014or implants\u2014into the uterine wall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/when-does-implantation-occur\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implantation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs, your body releases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hcg-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hCG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, signaling your ovaries to stop releasing additional eggs. HCG is the hormone that pregnancy tests\u2014both blood and urine\u2014detect. Hold off on taking that pregnancy test, though. It takes time for hCG to build up in your system, and it\u2019s recommended to wait until 12-14 days after ovulation to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/how-soon-can-you-take-a-pregnancy-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take a pregnancy test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0(Otherwise, you could quite literally be flushing money down the toilet.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many women wonder if they will feel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/implantation-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implantation symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But since the symptoms of implantation and early pregnancy can mimic the same symptoms a woman has as progesterone rises in the weeks leading up to her period, it&#8217;s nearly impossible to distinguish the difference. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The waiting game<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waiting for a missed period or a positive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/best-pregnancy-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be tough. It\u2019s completely normal to analyze every little ache and twinge, wondering if they\u2019re a sign of pregnancy. (Here, we offer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/17-ways-to-survive-the-two-week-wait\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17 Ways to Survive the Two Week Wait<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, like if you\u2019re at risk for an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, your doctor may bring you in for a blood draw. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/pregnancy-blood-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy blood tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more sensitive than urine tests, which means they\u2019re able to detect far smaller amounts of hCG. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though it\u2019s a little early, in some cases you may begin experiencing some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/first-signs-of-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first signs of pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If your cycle is typically shorter than 28 days, by the end of the week, you may realize that you could be pregnant. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will my pregnancy be O.K.?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s very common and completely normal to worry about miscarriage and the safety of your pregnancy. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep03894\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of clinical pregnancies miscarry. A clinical pregnancy is one that is confirmed by high levels of hCG (the pregnancy hormone) as well as ultrasound which will detect the gestational sac or heartbeat. But when you consider pre-clinical losses as well, the actual incidence of miscarriage is closer to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep03894\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it by far the most common complication of pregnancy. \u00a0So, if you do lose a pregnancy, know that you are not alone. (Also remember: it is not your fault.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although losses do happen, and researchers are still learning about the causes of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/causes-of-miscarriage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miscarriage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in most cases there is nothing that could have been done to prevent them. Most of the time, pregnancy losses are caused by chromosomal abnormalities, meaning that the embryo wasn\u2019t viable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does my immune system know not to attack the embryo?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a long time, researchers have wondered why a mother\u2019s immune system doesn\u2019t reject a developing fetus\u2014with its different antigens\u2014as foreign tissue. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2012\/06\/120607142244.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the implantation of an embryo changes the packaging of specific relevant cells that form the decidua\u2014the specialized structure that encases the placenta and the fetus. Because of these changes, the body&#8217;s immune system ignores the decidua, reading it as a zone of immunological inactivity. (Pretty amazing how smart the body is, isn\u2019t it?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And studies\u2014like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep03894\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific Reports<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014have shown that the lining of the uterus also sets something akin to an entrance exam for embryos. In other words, the body is trying to detect whether or not the embryo is viable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, eggs will become fertilized, but they don&#8217;t implant in the uterus. Often, these embryos contain abnormal cells or chromosomal errors. Ideally, the &#8220;entrance exam&#8221; checks the health of an embryo. And when it is functioning correctly, the uterus allows only high-quality embryos to implant\u2014 preventing pregnancy loss, fetal growth restriction, or preterm birth. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What else should I do this week?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go out with your partner or friends and have some fun\u2014anything to distract yourself from the waiting! At this point, though, it\u2019s important to avoid drinking too much alcohol.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get plenty of sleep, some gentle exercise, and eat a healthy, balanced diet.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t already, you should absolutely stop smoking or taking any recreational or illegal drugs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continue taking your prenatal vitamins with folate; this period of early development is when it\u2019s most important to have adequate folate in your system. Even before you realize you\u2019re pregnant, your baby\u2019s busy growing. One of the first things to form is the neural tube. Adequate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/folic-acid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">folate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps prevent neural tube defects, like spina bifida and anencephaly, which can be severely debilitating or fatal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read up on the first trimester.
