Well, technically, you\u2019re still not pregnant\u2014but this is the week you\u2019ll likely start actively trying for a baby. When you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> officially pregnant, your doctor will calculate your due date from the date of your last menstrual period, which was last week. For most women, conception occurs approximately two weeks after that date. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when you\u2019re trying to determine when your pregnancy began, the date you\u2019re really looking for is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/when-does-implantation-occur\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implantation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014when the fertilized egg burrows into your uterine lining, thereby starting your pregnancy. You can figure out this date using a couple of simple formulas (which we&#8217;ve covered in detail in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/implantation-calculator-when-did-it-happen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implantation calculator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> post).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last week, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) began preparing your body for the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/what-is-ovulation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovulation<\/span><\/a>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hormones-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormone<\/span><\/a> encourages the growth of follicles, fluid-filled sacs that each contain an egg, within your ovaries. Most of these follicles will begin to die off, but one will continue to grow into a dominant follicle. Ovulation occurs when another hormone, known as luteinizing hormone (LH) is released, and causes that dominant follicle to burst and release an egg. Depending on your cycle\u2014which can vary from woman to woman\u2014ovulation tends to occur at the end of week 2 or the beginning of week 3.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(And if you\u2019re interested in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/tracking\/pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tracking your pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> week by week\u2014Ava can help.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How big is my baby in week two of pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby\u2019s Length: 0.0 in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby\u2019s Weight: 0.00 oz.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is my baby developing?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, your baby is a single egg cell\u2014and a separate, single sperm cell\u2014waiting to meet. During ovulation, a mature egg is released into the fallopian tube, and this egg and your partner&#8217;s sperm may meet this week (or early next week) depending on the length of your cycle. When the sperm fertilizes the egg and conception occurs, the now fertilized egg (also called a zygote) is so small that you can only see it with a microscope. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This zygote will grow into a more extensive collection of cells, called a blastocyst, and will travel down the fallopian tube and implant into your uterine lining. Once the blastocyst implants in the uterine lining, which usually occurs eight to 10 days after ovulation, it rapidly begins producing the hormone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hcg-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hCG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy Week Two: What\u2019s happening in my body?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking to get pregnant this month, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJM199512073332301\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">timing sex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your most fertile days is the name of the game. Since fertility is determined by ovulation\u2014your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/ava-algorithm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertile window<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the day of ovulation and the five days before it\u2014the better you understand your body and its unique cycle, the better your chances of conceiving. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when do you ovulate? That\u2019s the million-dollar question when you\u2019re trying to conceive. Most calculations assume that a woman with a regular 28-day cycle ovulates on day 14 or 15. But studies show that most women don\u2019t ovulate on the fourteenth day of their cycle, as they are commonly told. (In fact, one study showed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC27529\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have fertile windows that don\u2019t fall entirely within cycle days 10 \u2013 17.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you ovulate and the egg enters the fallopian tube, it has to be fertilized by a sperm cell within 12 \u2013 24 hours or the egg will die, and you\u2019ll have to start the process over again next month. Luckily, sperm cells can live within the body for up to six days, which is why it\u2019s important not to wait until the day of ovulation to start trying. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve been wearing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ava<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/tracking\/cycle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tracking your cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for several months, you may have a pretty good indication of when those fertile days are. Even if you haven\u2019t been charting, you may be looking for some signs and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/ovulation-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But the truth is, ovulation happens on such a small level in the body that it usually cannot be \u201cfelt.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some physical signs when your body is preparing to ovulate and other physical symptoms that happen after ovulation, which may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased Resting Pulse Rate. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/ava-clinical-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical study data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resting pulse rate (RPR) begins to rise in the days before ovulation. RPR is lowest during menstruation, and increases by about two beats per minute (BPM) between two and five days before ovulation. After ovulation, RPR continues to rise, reaching a peak in the mid-luteal phase. It drops around the time menstruation starts\u2014or, if you&#8217;re pregnant, it remains high.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in Basal Body Temperature.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some women notice that basal body temperature (BBT) reaches a nadir (a low point) on the day of ovulation. However, this BBT nadir is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/epublications.marquette.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1005&amp;context=nursing_fac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not present<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the majority of charts and is not a very reliable way to identify ovulation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvis ache. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may experience mittelschmerz (named for the doctor who documented it first). This is a twinge, sometimes painful, in one side of your abdomen that occurs when the ovary on that side releases its egg. About 20 percent of women may experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/ovulation-pain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovulation pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but this doesn&#8217;t necessarily happen at the exact moment of ovulation, and it shouldn&#8217;t be used as a definitive indication that ovulation has occurred.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in cervical mucus. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay close attention to your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/vaginal-discharge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal discharge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. During most of your cycle, your vagina is acidic and hostile to sperm, and your cervical mucus is thicker and stickier. But as you approach your fertile days, the consistency of your cervical mucus changes. The cervix begins producing \u201cegg white\u201d mucus, which is slippery, clear, stretchy, and welcoming to sperm. (It&#8217;s like a Slip \u2018N Slide that helps the sperm travel more effectively toward the egg.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in cervical appearance. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing to check if you\u2019re trying to get pregnant is your cervix\u2019s appearance. It becomes softer, higher, and more open when you\u2019re ovulating.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some women swear that they started \u201cfeeling\u201d pregnant around the end of the second week, but it is unlikely. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/early-pregnancy-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early pregnancy symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often mimic pre-period symptoms, and it&#8217;s challenging to tell the difference between PMS and early signs that you&#8217;re pregnant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be anxiously looking for any possible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/first-signs-of-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first signs of pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but be patient. Even if fertilization occurs this week, there\u2019s really no way to detect it, so try to stay calm. You won\u2019t be able to get a positive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/how-soon-can-you-take-a-pregnancy-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until the fertilized egg implants in your uterine wall, and your body starts producing the pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hcg-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hCG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). HCG is the hormone that pregnancy tests (both blood and urine) look for\u2014and your body hasn\u2019t started producing it in earnest\u2014yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What else should I be doing this week?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have sex! You\u2019re ovulating. If you\u2019ve narrowed in on your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/ava-algorithm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertile window<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014have sex every other day (or every day, if you\u2019d like!) during that window. Having sex every day during your fertile window \u00a0(the five days leading up to the day of ovulation, and the day of ovulation itself) gives you a 25 percent chance at conceiving. (Doing it every other day gives you slightly lower chances, 22 percent.) For more details on this, check out our post about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/how-often-should-you-have-sex-to-get-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how often you should have sex to get pregnant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manage any stress and anxiety you\u2019re feeling. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/09\/160912161019.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that women who reported feeling more stressed leading up to ovulation were 40% less likely to conceive during the ovulation window.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don&#8217;t have an OB-GYN, this is an excellent time to research doctors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not already, start taking a prenatal vitamin containing 400 micrograms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/folic-acid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">folic acid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The early weeks of pregnancy\u2014even before you know you are pregnant\u2014are critical, developmentally.
