Don\u2019t worry\u2014you\u2019re not alone. Many women don\u2019t pay any attention to it until it\u2019s time to give birth.\u00a0A mucus plug is just exactly what it sounds like: a\u00a0thick glob of mucus (not unlike the kind that comes out of your nose) that is secreted from your cervical glands.<\/p>\n<p>Remember how you kept hearing about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hidden-messages-cervical-mucus\/\">cervical mucus<\/a>\u00a0when you were trying to get pregnant? You may also see a little beige or brown, and that is perfectly normal. It\u2019s also normal if your mucus plug is tinged with blood. (But there shouldn\u2019t be bright-red blood\u2014if there is any bleeding or pain call your doctor right away.)<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not uncommon for women to mistake\u00a0losing the\u00a0mucus plug for their water breaking, but the former is thicker. All pregnant women will lose it at some point during labor and birth\u2014but not all women will notice it happening. It could mean that labor will start in several hours, but it could also mean that labor is still several weeks away. This is called &#8220;bloody show,&#8221; and is totally normal. Women who have never given birth before (nulliparous women) are more likely to have bloody show than women who have given birth before. <span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The reason? If you&#8217;ve never given birth, your cervix is narrower in diameter, and your uterine walls are thicker. So, sometimes, blood from ruptured blood vessels can cross over to the mucus plug.
