Commonly abbreviated as BBT, charting this health measure can be informative about your cycle, ovulation, and fertility window. BUT, it does have some challenges. To help you better understanding BBT, this post will cover the do\u2019s and don\u2019ts of tracking your temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">DO specifically use a basal body temperature thermometer<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">While it may be tempting to try to use a regular body thermometer, there\u2019s a good chance that they won\u2019t be accurate or sensitive enough to detect the subtle but significant changes in basal body temperature. It\u2019s recommended to use a thermometer specifically designed to measure basal body temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">DON\u2019T wait to take your basal body temperature in the morning<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">While BBT has its perks, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/problems-with-bbt-ovulation\/\">major problems with this method<\/a> is that you <strong><em>have<\/em><\/strong> to take your temperature as soon as you wake up and before you start doing anything else. The reason is because your body temperature is sensitive to any movements. Try to keep your thermometer on your bedside table so you can take a measurement as soon as you wake up, and remember take your temperature immediately\u2014before you sit up, go to the bathroom, talk, or drink water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Because this measure is so sensitive, know that sleeping in, drinking alcohol, and waking up to use the bathroom before checking can lead to inaccurate measurements.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">DO know what a biphasic pattern is<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">If you track your BBT, you\u2019ll probably see the term \u201cbiphasic pattern\u201d come up. This refers to the fact that body temperature is lower before ovulation, and then it rises after ovulation. For example, check out the following chart:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/coschedule.s3.amazonaws.com\/51968\/9b9b4a10-a58d-41fc-9ee3-b5630c9e9f2d\/1533336453095.png\" width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The first phase is pre-ovulation aka follicular phase. During this phase, body temperature is low, typically around <span style=\"background: white;\">34.5 &#8211; 35.9\u00b0C \/ 94.1 &#8211; 96.6\u00b0F<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A few days after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/when-does-ovulation-occur\/\">ovulation occurs<\/a>, body temperature increases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The second phase is post-ovulation aka luteal phase. During this phase, body temperature is higher, typically around <span style=\"background: white;\">35.3 &#8211; 36.7\u00b0C \/ 95.5 &#8211; 98.1\u00b0F.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Together, these two phases make the <strong>biphasic pattern.\u00a0<\/strong>When you see a biphasic pattern, it\u2019s a good indication that an ovulatory cycle occurred.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">DO know what a slow temperature rise means<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">For some women, it takes a few days for the temperature rise post-ovulation to become obvious while for others, the rise is sharp and clear. A slow rise in BBT does not necessarily hurt your odds of getting pregnant, but it can make it more challenging to pinpoint when exactly ovulation happened. Nonetheless, plenty of women have conceived when they\u2019ve had a slow BBT rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">DO know that it\u2019s telling you when the fertile window closes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A major drawback to the temperature method is that once you see that rise in BBT, it means that ovulation happened. But, you\u2019re fertile during the five days <em>before<\/em> ovulation and day of ovulation. So, by the time you see that BBT rise, your fertile window is closed for that cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">If you have regular cycles, then you could use last month\u2019s basal body temperature data to try and predict when your fertile window would be in the following month. But, if you have irregular cycles or variation in ovulation days, then it could be tricky to use this method for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/fertility-calendar\/\">fertility calendar<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">DON\u2019T assume that basal body temperature is the only way<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; margin: 0in 0in 8.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Basal body temperature tracking has been around for years, so it\u2019s a pretty well-established method, but it\u2019s definitely not the only method out there. Here are some other methods of tracking your fertility:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hidden-messages-cervical-mucus\/\">Cervical mucus changes<\/a> can be helpful detecting your fertile window. It\u2019s messy to track <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/vaginal-discharge\/\">vaginal discharge<\/a> changes and can be tricky to tell the difference, but it\u2019s also the cheapest method because you don\u2019t need to buy anything at all!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Urine tests for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hormones-101\/\">hormones<\/a> like luteinizing hormone can help detect ovulation. Depending on how long your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/long-lh-surge-last\/\">LH surge lasts<\/a>, these tests can help you predict your fertile window.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/order\/\">Ava bracelet<\/a> measures seven key health parameters, like resting pulse rate
