{"id":1228,"date":"2016-08-02T11:12:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-02T18:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/?p=1228"},"modified":"2019-01-28T13:13:34","modified_gmt":"2019-01-28T21:13:34","slug":"problems-with-bbt-ovulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/problems-with-bbt-ovulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Basal Body Temperature: 5 Reasons Why It&#8217;s Bad for Tracking Ovulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monitoring your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/how-to-use-basal-body-temperature-to-determine-ovulation\/\">basal body temperature<\/a>\u00a0(BBT) is probably the first way you started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/track-fertile-days\/\">tracking ovulation<\/a> and your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/your-fertile-period\/\">fertile window<\/a>. The method has\u00a0been\u00a0around\u00a0since our moms were getting pregnant, and it&#8217;s backed by science, so we trust that it works. But is it really a good method for figuring out the best time to try to make a baby? We don&#8217;t think so. Here&#8217;s why:<\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s harder than you think to track basal body temperature accurately.<\/h2>\n<p>Basal body temperature is influenced by many other factors besides ovulation, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sleeping in and checking your basal body temperature later than normal<\/li>\n<li>Drinking alcohol the night before<\/li>\n<li>Waking up to use the bathroom early in the morning before you check your\u00a0basal body temperature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>By the time you see a basal body temperature rise, it&#8217;s too late.<\/h2>\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re super diligent about taking your temperature and you manage to see a clear basal body temperature rise on your chart, it&#8217;s already too late to conceive that month. Your\u00a0basal body temperature rises\u00a0<em>after<\/em> ovulation, when you&#8217;re no longer fertile.<\/p>\n<p>If you have very regular cycles, you can use last month&#8217;s\u00a0basal body temperature rise\u00a0to estimate\u00a0when next month&#8217;s fertile window might be, but this is only an estimate. For many women\u2014especially those with irregular cycles\u2014this prediction may not be accurate.<\/p>\n<h2>Basal body temperature doesn&#8217;t always rise the day after ovulation.<\/h2>\n<p>Contrary to popular belief,\u00a0basal body temperature doesn&#8217;t always rise immediately after you ovulate.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1471-0528.2001.00194.x\/full\">According to a study that compared BBT readings with ultrasound<\/a>\u2014the gold standard in confirming ovulation\u2014only 11 percent of women have a\u00a0basal body temperature rise within one day of ovulation. For many of the women in the study,\u00a0basal body temperature did not rise until <em>more than two days after ovulation<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Practically, this means that 89 percent of women using\u00a0basal body temperature are identifying the wrong ovulation day. If you&#8217;re using\u00a0basal body temperature to time intercourse, you may over- or undershooting your fertile window by several days and\u00a0reducing\u00a0your chances of conceiving.<\/p>\n<h2>Basal body temperature charting is a lot of work.<\/h2>\n<p>Basal body temperature charting is a decent way of retrospectively confirming ovulation at the end of your cycle, but it&#8217;s\u00a0not very good at pinpointing exactly when it happened.<\/p>\n<p>If taking your temperature every morning were effortless, that would be one thing. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with having another possible datapoint about your fertility. But the truth is, most women find it extremely burdensome. Who wants to get woken up with an alarm at 6:30am every day reminding you to stick a thermometer in your mouth (or your butt, if you want a really accurate reading?!)? Who wants to worry about waking up their partner when the thermometer beeps? Who wants to hold in your pee so you don&#8217;t mess up your temperature reading?<\/p>\n<p>Not us!<\/p>\n<p>This gets into a larger issue, which is the expectation that women do all the work when it comes to fertility and baby-making. When it&#8217;s time to get pregnant, women are the ones peeing on sticks, asking google about the quality of their cervical mucus, taking their temperatures, and sometimes getting invasive fertility treatments.<\/p>\n<p>All men have to do is ejaculate. Not a fair deal!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s cool that charting your\u00a0basal body temperature can give you insight into your body, but for the limited information it gives you, it just doesn&#8217;t seem worth it to us.<\/p>\n<h2>There are better ways\u00a0to\u00a0track ovulation.<\/h2>\n<p>If\u00a0basal body temperature charting was the only way to find your fertile window, we might not be so critical of it. But there are plenty of other options. We&#8217;re quite partial to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hidden-messages-cervical-mucus\/\">cervical mucus monitoring<\/a>. Some women like OPKs.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Ava bracelet is pretty neat, too. Ava<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a sensor bracelet, worn only at night, that detects subtle physiological changes that are associated with changing hormone levels throughout the menstrual cycle. It was shown in clinical trials to detect an average of 5 fertile days per cycle in real time\u2014more than any other device. The reason it\u2019s able to detect that many days during the current cycle is because it doesn\u2019t only track temperature.
