It is normal in early pregnancy, but there can be instances where this fluid is a signal that warrants further medical attention. To help you know the difference between when it\u2019s cause for concern and when it\u2019s normal, this post will cover:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is leukorrhea?<\/li>\n<li>When is it normal to have this white vaginal discharge?<\/li>\n<li>Is leukorrhea one of the early pregnancy signs?<\/li>\n<li>When should I see a doctor for leukorrhea?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is leukorrhea?<\/h2>\n<p>Leukorrhea is the normal milky white or clear vaginal discharge. It is usually thin and could have a mild odor. It typically does not come with itching or strong foul odor.<\/p>\n<p>Vaginal flora help make this white fluid, which helps maintain an acidic pH in the vagina and prevents other harmful pathogens from thriving. So, this discharge is a good thing! Don\u2019t use vaginal wipes or douches because these can disturb your vaginal discharge from doing its thing.<\/p>\n<h2>When do you get leukorrhea?<\/h2>\n<p>Because white vaginal discharge can sometimes seem like an infection, like a yeast infection, it\u2019s important to know when it\u2019s normal to experience leukorrhea and when it\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Leukorrhea is <strong>normal<\/strong> when you\u2019re experiencing major changes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hormones-101\/\">hormones<\/a> like estrogen, so you might notice more of this discharge around the time of ovulation or early in pregnancy. And if you&#8217;re interested in figuring out when you ovulate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/tracking\/fertility\/\">cycle tracking\u00a0<\/a>can help.)<\/p>\n<p>You may notice leukorrhea as wetness in your underwear, so if you want to use panty liners for managing it, that\u2019s definitely fine. But, don\u2019t use tampons if you see this discharge because this can introduce new germs into the vagina.<\/p>\n<p>This white discharge is <strong>not normal<\/strong> if it comes with itching or odor. In these cases, it\u2019s possible that you have an infection. The most common vaginal infection is a yeast infection, but sometimes abnormal discharge can be a sign of bacterial infection or a sexually transmitted disease. Talk to your healthcare provider so you can get the right diagnosis and the treatment.<\/p>\n<h2>Is leukorrhea one of the early pregnancy signs?<\/h2>\n<p>While leukorrhea can happen during the menstrual cycle due to changes in the hormone estradiol, it\u2019s most commonly associated with early <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/pregnancy-discharge\/\">pregnancy discharge<\/a>. It can be tempting to examine your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/hidden-messages-cervical-mucus\/\">cervical mucus<\/a> to look for changes as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/first-signs-of-pregnancy\/\">first signs of pregnancy<\/a>. But changes in vaginal discharge are not necessarily an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/early-signs-of-pregnancy\/\">early sign of pregnancy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in pregnancy-related leukorrhea can start as early as a few weeks after conception and gets more noticeable as the pregnancy progresses. However, there are other potential causes for leukorrhea, so don\u2019t expect to gain any meaningful insight from your discharge during the two-week wait.<\/p>\n<h2>When to see a doctor about leukorrhea?<\/h2>\n<p>Leaking any vaginal fluid, whether it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/brown-discharge\/\">brown discharge<\/a>, bright red <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/spotting-before-period\/\">spotting<\/a>, or white discharge, can understandably cause some worry. But, leukorrhea is usually harmless and common to see during your cycle and when you\u2019re pregnant. However, if you ever observe any of these additional symptoms, it\u2019s important to see your health care provider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Itching or burning<\/li>\n<li>Change in odor<\/li>\n<li>Yellow or green tint<\/li>\n<li>More discharge than usual<\/li>\n<li>Pain in the pelvis or legs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re trying to get pregnant and notice this discharge, it is especially important talk to your healthcare provider about receiving treatment soon because infections are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avawomen.com\/avaworld\/causes-of-miscarriage\/\">causes of miscarriage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re already pregnant, leukorrhea is a part of normal pregnancy discharge, if you notice any major changes in consistency or amount, let your healthcare provider know.
